Brightson: A Handwritten Typeface for Thoughtful Branding
How Brightson Behaves Across Different Brand Materials
On business cards, the font became the hero element. I set the brand name in Brightson at a comfortable size, then let plenty of white space do the rest. The card felt tactile and personal, exactly what a small skincare brand needs when handing a card to a customer at a farmers market. The handwritten quality made it feel like the card had been written specifically for that interaction. For social media graphics, I used Brightson for product announcements and quote-style posts featuring ingredient stories. On Instagram, where users scroll quickly, the font’s friendly curves slowed the eye down just enough. People stopped to read. That kind of engagement is hard to achieve with a generic sans serif, but a well-chosen script font like Brightson creates a natural pause. The website header was another story. Hero text needs to land fast, and Brightson delivered. I paired it with a minimal layout and a soft botanical background image. The brand name sat front and center in Brightson, setting the tone before anyone read a single word of body copy. Visitors understood immediately that this was not a mass-produced brand. It was handmade, careful, and personal.Where Brightson Shines and Where It Steps Back
- The primary brand name on packaging and labels
- Hero headlines on the website and lookbook
- Accent quotes on social media and printed collateral
- Watermark-style text on product photography
- The main wordmark on business cards and stationery
Practical Notes for Using Brightson in Client Work
Tracking and spacing. Brightson comes with built-in spacing that feels generous without being loose. I did not need to adjust kerning much, even on large headlines. That saves time during client presentations and final file exports. File formats and compatibility. I downloaded Brightson in common font formats that worked across my design software and the client’s web platform. No surprises during handoff, which is always a relief. Alternates and ligatures. Brightson includes a set of stylistic alternates and ligatures that add variety to the letterforms. I used these intentionally on the main logo lockup to give the wordmark a custom feel. Swapping a default letter for an alternate made the brand name feel like it was drawn specifically for that client, not pulled off a shelf. Multilingual support. If your client works with international customers or uses multiple languages in their packaging, check the character set. Brightson covers the basics well, which was sufficient for this project. Commercial licensing. Always confirm that the font license covers the intended use, especially for product packaging, merchandise, and commercial print runs. Brightson is available under a standard commercial license, which covers most client branding and packaging needs.
